Up, Horny,DownIn his canon, Ashley has no powers beyond that of an average mortal to speak of. However, for Scorched I have chosen to give Ashley "Up, Horny, Down." In the simplest terms, what this is is the power to administer a strong, and sudden surge of adrenaline.Skills;"Adrenaline. Fucking Adrenaline. The heart beats like a hammer and the lungs suck up the air like a Dyson. Stupid fucking adrenaline makes you do stupid things. It's the hormonal equivalent of a lying bastard. Pumps you full of bullshit juice. Makes you believe you can get the girl, jump the fence, score the goal, and fix the TV aerial yourself. I. Fucking. Hate. Adrenaline."When Ashley's emotional stress levels are high (such as when he's experiencing an adrenaline rush of his own) this will trigger a defensive mechanism in Ashley, and skin-to-skin contact will cause the other person to have a sudden surge in their own adrenaline levels. Spiked adrenaline levels can cause a number of side effects, and can be applied for medical practices as well as cause serious medical conditions all on it's own.-Stuart Bayldon
"Adrenaline is your bodies response to a fear of atrophy, and death. Your blood streams have just been flooded by your adrenal glands, so whether you feel fine, or not, there is a come down that's due to you. In the next 24 hours you may well experience some violent mood swings. Typically you'll start out feeling euphoric, you may then grow restless, but ultimately become depressed."Ashley's power would cause characters to experience going through the steps of an adrenaline rush in varying intensities, depending on the situation and Ashley's own adrenaline levels. The "up" would last from 4 to 8 hours, and include a sense of euphoric high, as well as increased heart rate and a number of other small neurological reactions. The "horny" would be just what it says on the box; a sense of increased sexual interest, and arousal lasting until the character either 'cures' this stage themselves, or sticks it out for another 4 to 8 hours. The final stage is the "down"; a crushing sense of depression that would make a character feel increasingly negative about themselves, their relationships, etc. Whatever the inflicted character so chose. Obviously all effects of this power would be subject to character approval and permissions, and could be tweaked or modified as need be. Younger characters could easily skip the 'horny' stage, and instead just continue with the intense feelings of euphoria and excitement, or experience higher energy levels and hyperactivity instead.-Kirsty Schelmerdine
Ashley is an experienced Emergency Response Technician, and as such as fairly expansive medical knowledge. He is calm in emergencies, and is also immune to disgust by blood, shit, urine and corpses. Which is totally a skill. He also has a panty-dropping Scottish brogue, though not much interest for the ladies.Equipment;→ 1 Complete E.M.T. The series "Sirens" itself, takes place in modern day Leeds, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom. There are no variances from 'our' Earth, to the one pictured in the television show, other than the show is all fictional.
Very little of Ashley's personal history is ever demonstrated, or mentioned in the show. However, through his own comments and through comments of other characters, there are some things that we can derive about his past.
Due to his thick accent we can assume that Ashley was born somewhere in Scotland, and at some point he and his mother (and possibly father, though his father is never mentioned in the show) moved. He seemed to have moved to Leeds-as his mother still resides there-and so does at least one of his old schoolmates, much to Ashley's displeasure. Ashley himself admits that his childhood school years were troubled ones and he was the victim of serious bullying over his sexuality. Whether his sexual preference caused turbulence with his family is sadly never mentioned, however Ashley claims to have a very close relationship with his mother. He’s unable to deny her anything and she has come to support her son despite her deep religious feelings.
It is unclear whether or not he came out to his family during his early school years, however it is suggested that Ashley moved out on his own to pursue secondary education. Where he took his education is never touched on. It is mentioned that he spent some of this time exploring his own sexuality and attending a few wild parties.
At some point, he made the decision to take on the medical field and landed himself a career with the West Riding Ambulance Services in Leeds. Here, he met Stuart Bayldon and spent the next two years working closely with him. They became relatively good friends working together, as well as spending time together out of work. When the series begins, Stuart and Ashley have been assigned a trainee to their ambulance, a man by the name of Rachid Mansaur. Ashley and Rachid have a bit of friction in their partnership at first-Rachid demonstrates he doesn't have much respect for Ashley's divisions of privacy-but while working together the three of them develop a considerable bond of companionship.
Their day to day lives consist of what one would expect in such a line of work. They rush to emergencies, trying to make a set government standard (an eight minute response time) while dealing with the dramas of their personal lives.
In the first episode, the trio are called to a very serious car crash where Stuart performs an open heart massage to revive the patient. Their supervisor finds out about this act and the three are sent to meet Kirsty, the resident counsellor. Kirsty quickly establishes that the three are in a hierarchy but lets the matter go in favour of discussing the stressful experience the three of them endured. She explains that after what they've experienced, they are going to go through a series of mood swings because of the adrenaline their bodies were flooded with during the crash response. Stuart calls it 'Up, Horny, Down' and he isn't far off. Stuart declares that he is a master of his own biology and can ignore his natural hormonal responses. Ashley is mostly quiet, only making one statement about how they've experienced it all before.
When Ashley returns from his shift, he discovers that his apartment has been broken into and all of his electronics have been stolen. He isn't upset about this though, as he is 'insured to the hilt' and sees this more as windfall than as a negative. He then borrows his neighbour’s laptop to order some casual, no strings attached sex. He accidentally debases an educated black man to a stereotype for the sake of his own male power fantasy and winds up tied up naked in his own closet for it but only after Ashley is satisfied. He calls Rachid to rescue him and while Rachid is helping to untie his ankles Stuart shows up, just in time to catch Rachid and Ashley in what appears to be a compromising situation, at which point Ashley has a serious 'I hate my life' moment.
They return to work to attend their next shift where they hit the 'down' of their mood swings. Incidentally, they are despatched to a man balancing on the wrong side of a bridge and threatening suicide. Ashley declares that Stuart can examine the man's bleeding wrists as he and Rachid are 'too depressed' to deal with it. The episode concludes with the end of their second shift and the conclusion of their 'Up, Horny, Down.'
In episode two, the theme of the episode revolves around Stuart, the dynamic between Rachid and Ashley, and how Rachid constantly asks Ashley for private information that he has no interest in sharing. His sexual preferences and the reasons for why he's gay are constantly pressed upon by Rachid until Ashley reaches a breaking point. He chooses to ride on a different ambo to be away from Rachid's inane questions. While riding along with Carl-another ambulance driver-Ashley is called as back up to an apartment fire where Rachid and Stuart are already attending. Stuart climbs the scaffolding outside the building to reach the mother and daughter trapped on their balcony. After the excitement concludes, Ashley attempts to trade numbers with a police officer in attendance who happens to be Maxine's partner-one of Stuart's long time friends from school. The cop declines trading numbers with Ashley until the next time they meet.
After a long shift with Carl, Ashley returns back to his original crew where he and Rachid reach an understanding after Ashley explains that he wants Rachid to stay out of his business. Despite what he says, this is a backwards way of Ashley opening up to Rachid a little as well.
Episode three begins with Rachid's first discovered suicide. This pulls apart Rachid's perceptions of life and death to a point of crisis. He becomes obsessed over the concept of an 'In Case of Emergency' contact, or I.C.E. and how he doesn't have one. Ashley assists in dealing with this as he deals with most things; with deflection, sarcasm and mockery. When Stuart asks Ashley who his I.C.E. contact is, he explains that his emergency contact doesn't know they are his emergency contact. It's the person Ashley wants by his side when it really matters. Despite this, when Rachid later reaches his greatest moment of crisis, Ashley does go unhesitatingly to his aid.
Later on, Rachid's girlfriend leaves him and he hits his ultimate crisis point, calling Ashley to tell him that he's dying. Ashley rushes to help his him and arrives to console Rachid over his break up. It isn't so much the break up that has traumatized Rachid but the thought of dying alone. Ashley talks him through this and eventually Rachid returns to work. At the end of the episode, the boys are called to an elderly man whom has already passed. Here it is revealed that Stuart is Ashley's I.C.E. contact. It is at the end of this shift that I'm drawing Ashley from.Ashley Greenwick will tell you himself; he’s just another ordinary guy. He likes drinking, smoking and sex, hanging out with his friends and playing video games. He’s an average fellow, goes to work and comes home from a long day to unwind just like the rest of us. Ashley is a practical, logical man and takes what his life throws at him. Just like any ordinary guy, there is always much more beneath the surface.why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting?
First and foremost, Ashley is a very private person. He likes to keep his business as his own business. He separates church from state, family from work and work from friendship- or at least, he tried that last one. Stuart and Rachid had other ideas. He's happy in his life, enjoys his own time and space. His desire to keep his own matters private can make him come across as a bit prickly at times. It’s no secret to those who know him that he’s gay but when pressed for bedroom information or in cases when Stuart or Rachid ask him asinine questions about it, Ashley becomes defensive, deflecting however he can.
He is a naturally sarcastic person and he uses his sarcasm for a number of different reasons. While he does use his sarcasm to be humorous, he also uses it as a defence mechanism, a wall to hide behind. Whenever serious personal matters arise, Ashley’s first response is often to deflect the matter with a sharp tongued quip and a change of subject. This isn’t to say that he cannot take matters seriously but the nature of his job and his history have taught him to cope with the stresses in his life by dismissing them in this way.
In the midst of stressful situations he keeps himself calm and collected. The definitions of his job demand that he can keep his head in almost any situation, what comes after is Ashley’s demonstrations of his coping mechanisms. These mechanisms could be considered by some as unhealthy. He is far more vulnerable than he chooses to admit to and he is comfortable in his denial about this fact. He keeps himself distanced and detached from the terrible things he sees in his day to day job. When dealing with his stress, Ashley either turns to cigarettes, alcohol or sex. It’s not the healthiest way to deal with stress, however it’s a tried and tested manner for Ashley and it’s easy to fall back on. There are times when his psychological burdens build up beyond where even Ashley can defend against it and when this happens he becomes downright caustic. When he can’t deal with the problems in his life he often ends up taking these feelings out on those who don’t deserve it, such as patients or his friends. He deeply denies and avoids his personal problems, doesn’t like facing conflicts in his personal life.
Ashley has a number of commitment issues, he has no interest in a long term relationship and far prefers casual meaningless sex to intimate, personal relationships. Despite this, he states himself that he doesn’t want to die alone. He only has a small number of friends that he actually cares about and in episode six he has a week-long relationship that he breaks off and states as ‘long term’ for him. The only reason he allows this relationship to continue as it did was because he wanted to avoid the conflict of having to kick the guy out. He puts up walls to protect himself and distance himself from his relationships so that he cannot be hurt like he was when he was bullied as a child.
Despite that Ashley keeps himself distanced from most people, once you become one of Ashley’s friends, he’ll be there for you in your time of need. He still puts up a show of keeping his distance, not pushing the lines of work and friendship but he’ll drop everything in an instant for Stuart or Rachid when they need him. In this, Ashley demonstrates how truly loyal he is to those he cares about. It’s the same with his mother. She is a very dear person to him-he even goes so far as to go to a party and put himself in the position of facing a childhood bully all for the sake of pleasing his mother.
Even with all of Ashley’s foibles, he still considers himself the least fucked up of everyone he knows.Ashley is full of cynicism, bullshit and medical knowledge, and clearly everyone needs this in their lives. With Ashley's medical knowledge, he'll be an asset to have during serious emergencies. Calm under pressure he'll be able to handle the darker aspects of the game's mechanics, and the game will also force him to come out of his defensive shell a little. It will rattle his perceptions, and pull him out of a routine that has become comfortable, perhaps even easy. This will cause some potentially very interesting developments in Ashley learning about himself, as well as others. And, as an added bonus: A Song of Ice and Fire cast shenanigans for same-facing with Robb.Writing Samples
Network Post Sample:Link here, please note that while I originally had the usernameThird Person Sample: Coming to terms with suddenly being thrust from the time and space one knew and into something very different wasn’t at all what Ashley had expected to do after coming off his last shift. Nothing here seemed familiar, and the fog was an even more curious addition. He wasn't even ready to touch upon the fact that the fog here allegedly wasn't just fog.theomega, I decided to change to

“That’s it, this is either a very sick, elaborate joke- or a very fucked up dream,” he declared in a murmur to himself, fishing about in his pockets until he found his cigarettes. The pack was woefully near empty, and Ashley promised himself that he’d take care with the last few he had. They might have had cigarettes here, but he doubted they’d be anything near the same as what he was used to back home. Wherever home was, at this point- because as Ashley was quickly learning, 'home' wasn't just Earth for some.
“This has to be a dream. A seriously fucked up dream,” Ashley was numb to it. In the back of his mind, he could hear Stuart rattling off about ‘coping mechanisms’ and a ‘human brain’s natural defence systems’- but he wasn’t really listening.
Maybe he should have been concerned about the fact that he was hearing Stuart Bayldon’s voice in his head in the first place, but as it was, Ashley had more pressing matters to deal with. He was still struggling to process this place, the cigarette gripped between the fingers of one hand, his other in his pocket. He walked without purpose, simply trying to take it all in; the buildings, the people, the scope of it all.
“I am never letting Rachid talk me into curry before bed ever again,” he breathed, and brought the cigarette up to his lips, without even noticing that it was unlit.N/A
